Introduction

What is Djehooty?

Djehooty logo

Djehooty is a free and open-source software for digital archive management and document research.

It helps anyone faced with a large volume of documents to organize, enrich, and efficiently exploit them. The use cases are varied, and Djehooty's features adapt to each of them.

The software can run locally on your computer, or in the future, be deployed on a server to allow several people to collaborate on the same document collection.

Target audienceWhat Djehooty provides
GenealogistA structured space to centralize, annotate, and retrieve your documents locally, without relying on a third-party service.
Family or family groupA shared collection to gather family archives and explore them together.
Genealogical circle or associationA collaborative tool to work together on a common documentary corpus.
Researcher or research groupA searchable documentary database for conducting in-depth research on a broad field.
Association archivistA rigorous environment to catalog, enrich, and promote a heritage collection.

Needs

Djehooty addresses the following essential needs:

  • Store and preserve locally, in a centralized and secure manner, a wide variety of digital documents (images, audio and video files, text, etc.)
  • Consult, enrich, and organize these documents by adding metadata.
  • Search, cross-reference, and exploit the information contained in your archives efficiently.
  • Facilitate the sharing, promotion, and transmission of research, including to non-technical people.

Use cases

Djehooty is based on a common documentary core, designed not to be locked into a single use. Whatever the context, the same foundations adapt to your situation, with dedicated features added as needed.

Genealogy

Genealogy quickly generates large collections of documents: civil status records, censuses, family photographs, correspondence, digitized archives... Finding, organizing, and extracting relevant information from them soon becomes a challenge.

Unlike common genealogy software, its starting point is the document, not the individual. Before reasoning in terms of lineage, events, or family links, Djehooty helps you organize your archives, enrich them, and query them efficiently.

Classic genealogical features (trees, events, GEDCOM import/export) are planned in the roadmap and will be developed gradually, once the documentary foundations are consolidated.

Research

Djehooty is useful for any endeavor involving a large documentary corpus in the field of research: history, sociology, journalism, etc.

Any in-depth research generates a mass of documents that quickly becomes difficult to manage: digitized sources, field notes, photographs, recordings, bibliographic references... Djehooty was designed for this type of situation.

Researchers will find a tool to structure their collection, enrich each document with relevant metadata, identify individuals or places appearing in them, and cross-reference information between sources. Deployed on a server, Djehooty will also allow a team to work collaboratively on the same corpus.

Upcoming features (advanced search engine, OCR, multi-user collaboration) will further strengthen this use case, following the project roadmap.
