Djehooty 0.3 : The genealogist’s new assistant
I am very happy to announce the release of the first public version of Djehooty, a free software designed to help genealogists manage and explore their digital archives. This version 0.3 marks an important milestone for the project, it is the culmination of a year and a half of work.
What is Djehooty?
Djehooty combines a personal Digital Asset Management (DAM) tool with a traditional genealogy software. It acts as a true research assistant for family history enthusiasts.

A tool for your research
Djehooty addresses several essential needs:
- Store and preserve locally, in a centralized and secure way, a wide variety of digital documents (images, videos, audio, notes, etc.)
- View, enrich and organize these documents by adding metadata.
- Search, cross-reference and exploit effectively the information contained in your archives.
- Facilitate sharing and transmission of your genealogical research, including to non-technical people.
Strong values
Djehooty is based on four fundamental principles:
- Free software: The source code is open under AGPLv3 license, guaranteeing transparency and sustainability.
- Privacy respect: Your data remains on your computer, under your exclusive control.
- Technical simplicity: Simple technology choices (SQLite, simple files) to facilitate backup and transmission.
- Accessibility: An interface complying with digital accessibility standards.
Features of version 0.3
This first public version allows you to:
- 📂 Import your files from your computer and organize them into documents.
- 🧩 Add and modify metadata on your documents.
- 👤 Create individuals, view them and identify them in your documents.
- 🔍 Easily search individuals and documents.

What's next?
Djehooty stands out for its innovative approach: priority is given to the development of advanced features for organizing, enriching and cross-referencing digital archives, rather than immediately reproducing classic genealogy tools.
Traditional features (events, trees, GEDCOM import/export, etc.) will be integrated gradually, once the documentary foundations are consolidated.
Some examples of upcoming planned features:
- Support for videos, audio and PDFs;
- Import files from a standard URL or IIIF format to download documents from institutional sites;
- Document transcription to facilitate indexing and searching;
- Advanced search engine;
- Internationalization (French, English)
For more details, you can consult the project roadmap.
Test Djehooty and share your feedback!
Djehooty is currently in active development phase and may contain bugs or major changes. I strongly encourage you to test the application, but I recommend not using it for critical purposes until a stable version has been released.
This first public version needs you! Your feedback is essential to evolve the project in the right direction.
